Beneath the imposing cliffs of Monchsberg, in the quaint little Karajan Square, the early 17th century 'Horse Pond' sits. Built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in 1603, the pond was originally where the parade horses of the prince archbishops were groomed and washed. The colourful murals decorating the walls surrounding the pond depict familiar customs of the era. Anyone who has seen the well known Hollywood movie, 'The Sound of Music' may recognize this wonderful place as being featured in the film, Maria and the Von Trapp children gaze adoringly at this unique landmark as they pass by on a carriage ride through Salzburg. Horse Pond Karajan Square Salzburg Austria has added texture to compliment the historic feel of this classic Austrian scene.
