Description
High above the fog-shrouded valley below I pondered the strange town called Civita di Bagnoregio, near Rome and Orvieto Italy. Civita di Bagnoregio sits atop a small plateau of friable volcanic tuff (volcanic rock over a bed of soft clay and sand) overlooking two river valleys. Although it was founded over 2500 years ago, Civita di Bagnoregio has been crumbling ever since due to earthquakes, rain, river erosion, and landslides causing the edges of the plateau (along with any buildings) to collapse and crumble into the valley below. Don’t think I wasn’t thinking of that as I stood on a patio on the edge of the cliff! It became known as The Dying Town with a permanent population somewhere around 10. The town was placed on the World Monuments Fund's 2006 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites and in 2017 was included in a tentative list of new UNESCO World Heritage sites. A fee of 3 euro per person to enter the town is helping to fund preservation efforts.
